Sakaerat Environmental Research Station

Sakaerat has been running research on the environment and on ecology since 1967, and more than 200 studies have now been done on this ground. In 1976 UNESCO recognised it under the Man and the Biosphere Programme as a biosphere reserve — the first in Thailand and, at the time, one of only seven in Asia. There are now 529 such reserves across 105 countries. Because the site matters and because its research had been scattered across decades, collecting it into one ordered body of data became a priority in its own right: so that it can be taught to students and to the public, so that future research has somewhere to start, and so that it can be exchanged with biosphere reserves elsewhere in the world. That work is coordinated by the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at NSTDA, the agency responsible for Thailand's MAB/UNESCO programme.
