In 1994 a permanent reforestation project began on this hillside in honour of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's fiftieth year on the throne, worked along the lines he had set out. The slope had been stripped bare; within nine years it had grown back, and what returned is now used as an open-air classroom in how a forest repairs itself.
